Artists: Donnette and Teddy Hayes
Donnette is a spoken word artist, poet and writer.
Born 28 years ago to a Jamaican mother and an American father who was serving in the American armed forces, Donnette grew up as a military brat who moved frequently around the US .
“It wasn’t until one of my English professors at Hampton University encouraged me to change my major from electronic engineering to English that I even knew I had writing talent,” explains Donnette.
The eldest of five children, Donnette started her writing and spoken word career while still serving in the US Air Force as a PMEL (Precision Measurement Equipment Laboratory) calibration technician.
“I was stationed in Japan when I became conscious of my passion for spoken word” she says. Donnette began appearing at various English speaking poetry events in Japan and continued when she returned to the United States.
While on an extended visit in London earlier this year to visit her mother’s family, Donnette struck up a chance conversation at a Starbucks café with a guy displaying an American accent. The guy turned out to be the person that some media critics have called a renaissance man and visionary, writer/producer/filmmaker Teddy Hayes .
“My friend and I invited Donnette to hang out one night at a local Brazilian Samba club, and while we were driving in the car, she started to recite some of her poetry. Needless to say I was very impressed. So impressed that five weeks later I signed her to my music and film production company” says Teddy.
“Because Teddy and I both have similar political convictions about certain things like the saving of the planet and the physical manifestation of positive mental and emotional energy, we began talking about politics, and we found to our delight that we were both supporters of Barack Obama for president of the US” says Donnette.
“I already had written a melody to a musical track that I had, so I asked Donnette if she would like to contribute to the project and she agreed” says Teddy Hayes.
After a few more conversations, it was decided that the pair would start off Donnette’s career with a song and video supporting Obama’s candidacy as well as a song that would shed light on the fact that more women need to cast off the negative images and mindset that are too often forced upon them by the media and celebrate their own beauty and uniqueness by creating a positive self image. As a result Teddy and Donnette recorded songs and music videos “I’m Voting For Obama” and “Wonderful Light.”
“In the past, I have been approached many times by people wanting me to sign to their company as an artist, but somewhere along the line, I always got the feeling that it wasn’t for me, and that they were more interested in me as a product than what I had to say as an artist, but with Teddy, it was different. Even though he was a businessman and producer, I recognized that he was also a very highly creative person and when we started talking about ideas, he would take my ideas and infuse them with his perspective to take them to new heights and create something that I could get really excited about. Everyday we are in the throws of creativity. And many times throughout the day when we talk, our conversations are filled with new ideas and concepts and we are moving forward very quickly to give birth to the kind of work that we feel can touch people’s lives and bring a positive and interesting message to the world. Right now I feel I am fulfilling my dream and embarking on a musical adventure of self discovery” says Donnette.
TEDDY HAYES
A native of Cleveland Ohio, Teddy Hayes is best known as the author of the Harlem-based Devil Barnett series of detective novels. A talented force in a number of creative fields, his experiences range from working as a scriptwriter for Melvin Van Peebles and directing music videos to writing directing and producing stage plays, feature films and musical shows. An accomplished singer and composer, Hayes has written music inspired by the Devil Barnett books and is the creative force behind a touring stage tribute to the work of Marvin Gaye. His latest feature film completed in March 2008 is called “That Samba Thing” and is set to be released in the USA in late 2008.
